Local Farmers Markets
Sat Oct 5th, 2019
Ah the good old days. As a kid I would walk down to the local store. The store owner knew my mom, dad and even my siblings. He also knew every family on our block. The same was true for the local bakery, pie factory, five and dime store and even the local butcher all knew my name.
Fast forward to today. Many of us shop online or go to a big box store and everyone is a stranger. Most of us don't even know our neighbors. Having that community connection is very comforting and if you have never experienced it, all is not lost! That neighborhood connection is there is you want it.
Most of you have heard the term "Buy Local" but what does that actually mean? Did you ever think about all of the benefits that go back to your local community from buying goods and services from local business owners? Not to mention that close-knit community feeling.
Here are some of the benefits to buying local:
- Conserves energy because there is less fuel used as items didn't need to be transported very far
- Items are freshly made. They are not pre-packaged or sitting around waiting for transport
- Helps create more local jobs
- Less packaging needed which reduces trash for landfills and helps the environment
- Money stays in your community and helps other local businesses
- Helps grow your community tax base that can be used for improvements (ie local schools, seniors, road improvements and other local needs)
- You get to know, like and trust local merchants
Shopping local is a great way to give back to your community without even trying! A great way to shop local is by visiting local farmers markets.
Local Roots Farmers Markets (Local Roots, LLC), is owned and operated by Lee County residents, Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura. Established in 2008, Local Roots, LLC is now the operator of 9 of the largest Farmers Markets in Lee County Florida.
Each of the Local Roots Farmers Markets offer a unique opportunity for vendors to sell seasonal local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, breads, nursery stock and other commodities. Some of the markets also create an opportunity for local crafters to showcase their products. Attendees have the opportunity to buy locally and to gather with friends and neighbors in a relaxed outdoor setting.
